The working condition decides the positioner

Six services we know intimately — what fails first, why, and which configuration answers it. If your service isn't here, tell us the details; that's the conversation we prefer.

01 · Oil & Gas / Refining

Radiant heat, long runs between turnarounds

Overhead reflux and reboiler loops sit on tower platforms above hot lines; ambient inside the structure reaches 55–60 °C in summer. The usual complaint is a zero that walks with solar gain — re-zeroed every shift, fighting the controller all day. Instrument air arrives through long headers with a history of oil carryover.

  • Mechanical nozzle-flapper front end — no electronics to thermally drift
  • Split-mount option keeps the body off the hot vibrating structure
  • Online hot-swap: replace without a shutdown window
  • ESD valves on the same unit: built-in PST (10–30%) proves it will move
02 · Power Generation

Feedwater, desuperheater and bypass duty

Three-element feedwater control and spray desuperheating demand a valve that follows quickly and holds a tight band; load-following operation punishes deadband and hysteresis. Bypass valves must stroke fast and reliably; safety-related loops are engineered and proof-tested under a functional-safety regime.

  • SIL3 certified platform with partial stroke testing for ESD duty
  • Fail-in-place on air, power or signal loss
  • Volume boosters for fast stroking on large actuators
  • Winter freeze protection: internal tubeless air circuit, low air consumption
03 · Water & Wastewater

Outdoor humidity, chlorine, lightning season

Most water-plant positioner failures are not process failures — they're water ingress, chloride corrosion and surge damage during the storm season. Pump stations are unmanned for weeks at a time, so a fault is discovered late.

  • IP66 enclosure; tubeless internal circuit avoids external tubing that traps moisture
  • Built-in surge protection
  • 316L stainless version for dosing rooms and coastal sites
  • Remote diagnostics and limit contacts for unmanned stations
04 · Metallurgy / Coking

Dust, oil mist, vibration

In coking and sintering areas, airborne dust and oil mist attack feedback mechanisms; skid vibration loosens linkages. Positioners that survive elsewhere fail here within months — the reference case in our own records is a coking plant where positioner life moved from six months to four years after switching technology route.

  • Nozzle-flapper route tolerant of contaminated air
  • Split-mount: keep the body away from vibration, feedback unit on the stem
  • Sealed housing, fewer external linkages
05 · Chemical / Chlor-alkali

Chloride atmospheres and aggressive vapours

In brine and chlorine service the process is often less hostile than the atmosphere around it: fasteners seize, housings corrode, feedback parts fail before the electronics do.

  • 316L stainless housing for chloride-bearing atmospheres
  • Epoxy-coated aluminum as the standard alternative
  • Hazardous-area certificates for the relevant zones
06 · Pharmaceutical / Fine Chemical

Small valves, low flow, tight bands

Diaphragm and small globe valves on dosing lines have short strokes and small volumes — a standard positioner hunts, and the loop never settles. Deadband, not accuracy, is the limiting factor.

  • Low-flow SFA configuration, optimised for short stroke and small actuators
  • Two-wire 24 V supply option for simple loops
  • Auto-calibration in minutes during commissioning and changeover
